Hi guys! Even if Tom's DIner is an old song, what's your interpretation of the meaning of the lyrics and of the song itself now that it's sung by Britney? According to you has it a link with Britney's life? Or what is the meaning of the story of Tom's Diner?

It makes me think of a soundtrack for a thriller , or a crime movie   :qtney:

I agree with the review that said it sounds like Britney daydreaming or longing to be a normal, anonymous person. But I also think where they end the song ("when I'm feeling someone watching me and so I raise my head") makes it sound like a fan or paps have spotted her and wakes her up out of the daydream. She definetely gives the song new meaning, however the original is not too far off when you look up the inspiration:

Vega wrote the song based on a comment by her friend Brian Rose, a photographer, who mentioned that in his work, he sometimes felt as if "he saw his whole life through a pane of glass, and [...] like he was the witness to a lot of things, but was never really involved in them."

With Britney singing it, it kind of makes it a bit sad.

If you ask me, it's about an unrequited love.

I'm waiting at the counter
For the man to pour the coffee
And he fills it only halfway
And before I even argue
He is looking out the window
At somebody coming in.

Okay, so Britney's at a diner and has a total crush on the guy serving her. He notices Britney, but then he notices the hoe coming in and completely ignores her.

It is always nice to see you
Says the man behind the counter

He got a crush on her, it's obvious.

And I look the other way
As they are kissing their hellos
And I'm pretending not to see them
Instead I pour the milk

Britney's pissed because she realizes the server is taken. So she finishes her coffee herself. Time to move on.

Love Is The Drug That Makes You Wanna Drink Till The Morning After.

This weird lyric from Giorgio is a different approach for the song. While it may  not mean anything, the next lyric does.

I open up the paper
There's a story of an actor
Who had died while he was drinking
He was no one I had heard of

WOAH, go back to the previous lyric. "Love is the drug that makes you want to drink till the morning after."

Isn't Britney reading a newspaper and drinking coffee? Typically, that's something people would do in the morning.

So this actor drank himself to death, because he *assumingly* was in a one sided love. Right?

And I'm turning to the horoscope
And looking for the funnies
When I'm feeling someone watching me
And so I raise my head.

Some people use the horoscope as a prediction in their love life. Not necessarily meaning that's what this one is about, but it's an interesting thing to notice.

As for the last 2 lines, the way I interpret them, Britney notices someone watching her, and possibly being in love with her - just as she liked the server. Making it a strange one-sided-love-triangle.

Kinda weird, but that's what I think when I hear it.

I didn't read what you had to say cuz it was too long :omg2: but I totally I agree I thought it was about unrequited love :eyeney:

I interpret it as Britney finally being the "people watcher" as opposed to being the one always watched by others.  She loves NYC because she feels anonymous there so here she is, trying to take in an ordinary moment by herself, being one of the people.  And then in the end she finds herself spotted, and is no longer "just Britney".

I love this interpretation, MuuMuse stated this so well.  I like where the song ends and drew the same conclusion: she'd been caught.
