Sorry to say Britney fans, but the singer’s “Piece Of Me” Las Vegas residency is, in fact, ending. After initially signing on for a two-year stint and then renewing her stay for another two, the internationally adored pop star has apparently had enough of Sin City for the moment, and the final show of her program is set to wrap on New Year’s Eve at the end of this year.

In its years on the Strip, “Piece Of Me” earned the distinction of being one of the most successful shows to ever descend onto Vegas. Earlier this year, the residency, which played like a greatest hits collection, announced that it had sold more than $100 million in tickets, and that doesn’t take into account merchandise sales or the shows the singer still has yet to perform before she’s officially done. That’s an enormous sum of money—and it also doesn’t take into account any additional revenue those who came to Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas spent on hotel rooms, restaurants, alcohol or in the casino—and it's difficult to estimate an all-encompassing sum that might explain just how valuable the chanteuse really is.

The legacy Spears leaves is much larger than money, even though the final total she’s likely responsible for is massive. Money comes and goes, especially in a city like Vegas, but the “Womanizer” singer has changed one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world for good, and it's impossible to attach a price tag to that kind of revolution.

Before the Grammy winner came along, Las Vegas residencies were only for those on the downswing of their career. Those taking part were certainly still stars (nobody could claim names like Elton John or Celine Dion aren’t some of the biggest in the music business), but they weren’t the type that were still playing for top 40 stature. While the past four years have not been the most successful for Spears on the charts, she hasn’t stopped releasing new albums or pushing catchy singles. In fact, while she’s been busy in Las Vegas, the singer has debuted two albums (Britney Jean and the more recent Glory) inside the top 10 on the Billboard 200, and she has charted five singles on the Hot 100.

After it was clear that “Piece Of Me” was a victory for all involved, a slew of fellow pop stars followed in Spears’ footsteps. Since the pioneering singer began her show, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Pitbull and even the Backstreet Boys have headed to the Nevada desert to perform for their fans and make some good money, and there are surely more to come in the future, especially now that there is set to be a Spears-sized hole left in the entertainment options available to visitors.

Older stars were valuable for bringing in baby boomers that had disposable income, but those at the top in Vegas knew they had to do something to attract younger crowds, as they didn’t have the same penchant for gambling as their parents seemed to. With every city offering brightly-lit neon attractions and many of the same features as Vegas touts, such as fine restaurants, luxury hotels and incredible shopping, millennials have been opting to go elsewhere.

Those young people, the very ones Las Vegas titans have been trying to bring to the oasis in the desert for years, are the very ones who grew up on the music of Britney Spears, and she continues to hold a special place in their hearts. From the beginning, with songs like “Hit Me Baby One More Time” all the way through her troubled times with her Blackout album (which is still arguably her best) to current day releases, the chart-topper has maintained an important place in pop culture, and her influence and celebrity power is as undeniable as it is unavoidable.

Vegas is back on the map for younger travelers in a way it never would have been before Britney showed up, and while she may leave, the city has reentered the American consciousness in an incredibly valuable way. She may depart and the show may soon be over, but no other pop star can claim to have left the same mark on Sin City as she has, and that’s worth much more than any amount of ticket sales.

I am glad she continued to stay where she was comfortable and happy. And she ended up making a stamp for it too :cinderellaney:

I'll be honest, I didn't see it being as big as it was. I figured she'd do well enough and it would get her back on her feet, but her impact - my lord. I mean, I had never been to Vegas prior to seeing her show (and tbh I don't want to go back, Vegas sucks).

I knew it would be wonderful for her, but the fact that it more than exceeded expectations is really incredible. While fans want to bitch and moan about "relevancy" and all these stupid social media fanwars, Britney's out there working hard and still inspiring all their faves.
