I would say Criminal is one of the riskiest and most edgy given the lyrical content.  It's not the type of song that most people can relate to on a literal level.  Most people probably didn't know what to make of the song plus the production was quite different.  Telling your mother that you are in love with a criminal is not something typically found on pop radio.  A song like Up N Down would have been a safe 4th single choice.  Plus mid-tempos are always a risk for Britney since they are generally less successful.

Work Bitch isn't getting enough credit. The sound and song structure is so different from anything that is out there. The vocals are so different. The beat is so aggressive. It was a risk which is why it wasn't an instant hit. It needed more promotion to get to the top - the potential is there.

well I was going to make a large post full of reasons but you guys took the words out of my mouth :crying3:

Just to be clear, imo:
-Slave
-Toxic
-Gimme more (Actually the whole blackout album was quite unexpected from brit)
-IUSA
-3 we could say, not that much.

-HIAM
-Work Bitch

And to make it more entrataining, the less risky or daring:
-oops (such a obvious continuation of BOMT)
-MATM (it was a great commercial move to do it with madonna after vma 2003)
-Womanizer (generic song, with a full of sex video, pure britney spears, great to make the "comeback")
-TTWE (Pop song, partying, sexy video. Of course it was going to be a hit. Not to talk when she released the remix. good movement tho)
-Scream&Shout (so generic, of course a big succes)

I get what you mean about the more recent hits being more mainstream but they have edginess to them (HIAM, WB..etc..)

But Gimme More was fresh, very different to anything else she had done, plus much darker than her previous songs.

I would LOVE Brit to do more dark pop songs, like Gimme More, Deffo my favorite song!! love the mystery and the bad girl attitude that comes across - She could do it so flawlessly. :fyea:

Noone is actually gonna mention 3? :who: Do you remember the contorversy it made? People were going mad over it "OMG SHES SINGING ABOUT A THREESOME TEACHING OUR KIDS OF SINFUL THINGS" not to mention how the the erase the word SIN for radio and mv and made it sound like "LIVING IN NES IS A NEW THING" i mean what bitch?! WHAT!? And the single still slayed everything, it was all over the radios and the clubs, still remains one of my fave singles :tbh:

3 deserved a better video!!! Britney looked flawless in it and she had great energy, but the editing was poop!
