Britney Sets the Record Straight

Britney Spears was forced to abruptly end her concert in Mexico City on July 28 due to dangerous weather conditions. Her Mexico trip caused quite a controversy from the moment she landed until she left the stage, leaving fallout from fans and the media.

The canceled concert wasn't the only problem Britney faced in Mexico. The day she arrived she was nearly run off the road by the paparazzi, prompting her to make a gesture that led to more fallout. Access Hollywood's Nancy O'Dell sat down with Britney for an exclusive interview so she could clear the air about what really happened.

Nancy O'Dell: So you came to us to set the record straight. Now tell us what happened.

Britney Spears: Well, we were on stage and it was the fourth song ... it was during "Stronger," and we started seeing lightning. And first of all we had our shoes on and we were slipping and sliding all over the stage. It was just really dangerous for not only me but the dancers and the crew and everybody. So they told us that we had to get off the stage because it wasn't safe for us to be up there.

Nancy: The dancers were even warning you to slow down, correct?

Britney: Yeah, I had slipped like four or five times on stage. I felt like a goofball in front of 50,000 people, and we couldn't even really be full-out because the choreography is so strenuous. We had to just tell ourselves to mellow out because we were going to fall, so that is what happened

Nancy: How frightened were you compared to other concerts that you have given?

Britney: It was my last show and I really wanted to be able to give my all, and right when I went out there I was sad because I couldn't give anything for all these people. It was really scary, it was very scary.

Nancy: After the concert was canceled the Mexican fans were yelling, 'Fraud.' What did you feel like, knowing that you had canceled this concert for safety and then they were yelling that?

Britney: Well, I wasn't out there then, I was gone, so thank goodness I didn't get to hear that. I think it's kind of sad, you know; I did a show for them the night before and I gave my all. And actually they told us not to go on stage at all at the very beginning, before I even went out there, and I was like, 'No, we're here. There's 50,000 people out there. I have to go out there and make an effort.'

Nancy: I understand actually all the people who bought tickets are going to get a refund.

Britney: Yes.

Nancy: Let's talk about the raising of the middle finger incident.

Britney: Oh god, OK. Well, I wasn't flipping off my fans at all. I love my fans! We got off the plane and the paparazzi and all the camera crews were there. We almost got into a wreck on the way to the hotel and they were getting out and they were shaking the van and they were really getting a little bit out of hand. And we were in danger, basically, so I gave them the finger because I was not happy with that. But it was not to my fans. I love my fans.

Britney also told Nancy that she plans on taking the next six months off to spend time with family, travel, eat hot dogs, and do just what Britney wants -- remember, she's just 20 years old.
