I Am A Living Proof That Forcing Your Voice To Go Nasal Can Destroy It

I used to sing very good, I've spent over 15 years training my voice with a private coach and went to the music academy (I am from Europe). However around when i was at the age of 17 I was for some reason impressed by the voice color Britney has, I confused the fact that she was forced to sing nasally with a voice color (i have no idea why I didn't see this back then) so I started copying her. I started singing her songs trying to copy her voice. At that time I also couldn't manage my private singing lessons so i paused for a few months (4-5) which is not nearly enough for my voice to simply let loose like that. All those 5 months i sang Godney's songs on daily basis copying her gorgeous voice. Little did I know that my voice was getting rekt because I forced it nasally. After a couple of months I tried to sing the Phantom of the Opera ( my personal fave) just so I'd check how my voice is. I was shocked, I completely failed most of the high notes I was supposed to hit with ease, my voice was shaking and it was out of control, and for some reason I couldn't breathe through my nose properly as I sang. I called up a meeting with my coach asap. I sang it for him and he knew what the problem was RIGHT AWAY. He asked me if I forced my voice nasally which I replied to positively. He said one must not do that for too long because it can harm the vocal cords and destroy your ability to let your voice go high. However I was lucky when he told me it can get fixed, but it takes a certain ammount of time. I managed to fix it (barely) i am 25 now. And I just recently thought about it, and realized that Britney probably has the exact same problem, not to mention how she sang nasally for years, it would probably take her even longer for her to fix her vocals. Now don't get me wrong, Britney has a gorgeous voice, we have seen that during BOMT era, her nasal forced voice started with OIDIA song and album, and continued up, stopped at the itz, and continued again with blackout up to this day. I hope they can realize this and fix it so Godney can have her gorg voice back :)

Sorry for my long post :) Just tried explaining a few things.

Edit: for those of you who are not familiar with what Phantom of the Opera sounds like :)

wow, I have no idea about those detrimental effects. I also tried to sing Britney song by imitating Britney's nasal (or something) voice but now I realised that I could no longer sing if keeping doing this way

Exactly, believe it or not , Britney's voice used to be soprano (as stated by the vocal coach she had and as she had already proved many times). Soprano is the highest female vocal there is in the opera, it's equivalent to falsetto, the highest male vocal there is in the opera. However her team didn't care much, I am actually 90% sure that forcing her to sing nasally through her voice will most certainly damager her voice!

Really interesting. T4p :)

I was in the advanced chorus at my high school and our director would cringe when anyone used their throat and nose to sing. It really is improper technique no matter how sexy or cool it sounds.

Exactly! Aww I am so happy that there are some true musical people who got the knowledge in this forum  . Yes, it may sound very sexy and seductive, but it completely burns your vocals. In the times when opera had its go and was the most famous piece of art, many of the people who had some talent were vocally trained and there are some writings that some would put the acid in their nose so they would sort of break the nasal blockage (literally) and sing well. Whenever a student tried to sing nasally he would get a slap in the face by the coach :mhm:

Oh wow. And I thought my old teacher was bad! :lol3:

But yeah, now when I sing Britney songs I try to just sing properly, but sexily at the same time.

And do you dance also?

No this is BS you lost your voice because you didn't train it for 5 months Its simple.

Since i expected people to say this,i have stated that it is impossible for ones voice to let loose and go wild based on only 5 months of not training professionally, it doesn't work that way :)

Yes! Usually ballet, modern, and jazz.

Omg ballet truly is a wonderful thing, i buy a ticket and watch whenever i have the opportunity and whenever the biggest casts happen to come across my city

ERM yes it does. The voice is a muscle and as with any muscle you either use it or lose it. If I built decent biceps and then stopped going to the gym for 5 months. Would I still be able to lift heavy weights? No! The same thing applies to the voice. Please bare in mind that I have qualifications in vocal training before you respond.

I agree. It's magical and I love watching and doing it. I saw the nutcracker and it was so fun.

I'll add to this little debate and say that while I am no expert, I do know that everyone's bodies can react differently, even to the same circumstances. One person may not have to work as hard or consistently at something to continue to be adept at it as another person. Due to lucky genetics or whatever.

This actually makes a lot of sense, I mean Britney has been processed, a lot you can hear it when she speaks so croaky now days. Smoking doesn't help either. I understand why she lip syncs though, she shouldn't, but maybe she doesn't want to damage her voice more, and I hope she's trying to strengthen it.

She's a soprano? :waitWAT: But have you seen her on star-search I thought she was at least Mezzo, not an Alto though.

This kinda happened to me lol, when I was small I told myself that I had to sing like that because it was the pitch of the song now I messed up my vocal chords and they won't mature well :(

Yeah, she can get her voice back the problem is she seems to be a bit lazy lately, and getting your voice back in shape can be not only hard but also very painful! Id know haha. I am very sorry for your voice too, if you are financially capable you should hire a vocal coach. He/she would help you regain the vocal strength which is usually the main thing that gets lost when you force nasal high pitched singing

Britney seems to be taking back on her lazyness lately going to the gym and stuff so there is hope for her :excited:

I used to have a vocal coach, but it wasn't a personal class and the class was with mostly girls so he forced me to sing higher, and now I crack, and sound horrible with my regular pitch :(

Well, I think her voice is damaged not only for singing nasally , since she barely sings live, but because of her speaking voice. I mean, she speaks the same way she sings :yakno: and it sounds forced . Plus, she smokes :mhm:

Nasality is something weird, it's like once you get used to it, you forget the proper way to sing :bigtime:

And I don't think Britney is a soprano :moorangu: she sounds like a mezzo to me :giggle:
