Ahhhh, I love the sound of Innovationney in the morning :)

Honestly though, I love most of her work with Michelle! I always found this sound that Britney was pioneering to be so fresh and raw, and tbh I don't hear, nor do I hear currently, any artist with a sound like it.

https://soundcloud.com/monajeanlisa/conscious-britney-spears-new-leak

It's a specific kinda sound: sparse Afrobeats, orchestral swells, acoustic-oriented complex chord progressions (lookin atchu, Conscious!) and totally driven by Britney's iconic thin southern huskiness. Deviating away from the maximal clubby pop of Timbaland et al that dominated the early 00s, Britney was bringing a new sound to the table: a sound just a sexy, but without all the frills and gloss; a rawer, slinkier feel that I wish would've hit the radioscape back then.

While I'm not too devastated about losing OD since we got the equally-trendsetting Blackout, I wish this sound got more mainstream, because if it did, there'd be way more people contributing to this burgeoning genre. In a world that now awash in lazily-arranged electropop & EDM and unimaginative retro throwbacks, a sound that's as musical, raw, and frankly, as sexy as this would be an incredibly innovative breath of fresh air :)

Even if you're not sold on the sparse sound of Peepshow and Conscious, the concept can (and was, see below) be expanded upon to create this chamber/baroque pop, like Mona Lisa, eschewing away the acoustic guitar for a fuller orchestra and Gregorian choir instead.

tbqfh if an indie band came out with an album of this, they'd be lauded as innovative. So show your appreciation y'all, cuz honestly, I think this sound (ESP CONSCIOUS) are criminally underrated in the fanbase :Godney:

I love those songs! They sound so raw, which would be very refreshing to hear comming from Britney. I mean, I love her "dance" stuff but we need more of this kind of songs aswell :)

I also adore this demo! That combination of the piano with her falsetto sound just so sexy.

I almost posted Ouch as a counterpoint to Mona Lisa in the OP, where instead of accentuating the orchestral elements of this new genre, you amplify the raw urban elements, but I thought if I did that i'd just get a bunch of "tl;dr", "not here for essays", "too lazy to read", etc. :moorangu: I LOVE OUCH!

Those unreleased songs are amazing. Ouch, Conscience, Peepshow, Love 2 Love U, Over to You Now, Mona Lisa, Let Go, Strangest Love. Rebellion :pieceofwhat:. I love them all. Put them together, and they make the perfect album.

How dare you snub Money, Love and Godliness :pieceofwhat:

but that's basically what I have under my fanmade OD album on my ipod :gloria:

I love Conscience & Peep Show! Also Mona Lisa, Guilty, Over To You Now, And Then We Kiss, Money Love & Happiness and Ouch.

If Original Doll was released, it would probably be one of my favorite albums today. I loved her creativity during this time, almost every song leaked song from 2004-2005 is a pure pleasure to my ears. Britney songs were really different than anything else on the radio released by other mainstream artists and her competitors. I wish we had more demos from these studio sessions ;(

Strangest Love is from Circus though but still it's one of her best unreleased songs. I love it so much <3

Yes, yes, yes! ML&H too! And Dramatic, Baby Boy, Pull Out, and Guilty! :giggle:

Not a huge fan of ML&H, but honestly if somebody took the time to do a good vocal rip, somebody could really update the song, because it's the instrumental that turns me off; I'm all hear for Sassyney slaying us

AND DRAMATIC PRAISE ME UNTO THAT SONG! I always viewed Dramatic as a transition between what she was aiming for with OD and what was slowly becoming Blackout, since it's got some of those minimalist elements from OD, but with a clear bent towards dark and electronic. tbh Dramatic is probably a precursor to GM idea-wise, since both are dark atmospheric electropop zingers built around an electronic hook that carries that whole song through; thankfully, she updated the sound and learned how to do a proper iconic intro, leaving behind the overwrought orchestral intro (that personally sounds more like how Circus (the album) shoulda opened with) and gettin straight to the point: it's Britney, bitch ;)

Haha thank you!!! :yesplz: I really REALLY REALLY like critiquing and analyzing music :embarrassed: partially why indie music dominates my life, and tbh, why my pop fave is Britney, since she's basically the only pop star who, through her entire career arc, has maintained a (mostly) immaculate discography when it comes to production and stylization :)

IKR!!!  :crying2:

I'm glad she decided to leak Conscious/Conscience though, at first I wasn't impressed by the song because it sounded like an early demo to me and I felt that some parts are missing, however I gave it a try a couple weeks later and totally fell in love with its simplicity and originality at the same time. Original Doll was defenitely her artictic peak, she knew what good music is  :crying2: I miss that Brit tbh

Couldn't agree more even i wanted to, and couldn't use better words to describe Britney's music and songs even if i wanted to :moorangu:

Speaking of openings, Blackout is the ultimate album for awesome song intros.

"It's Britney, Bitch"

"It's been awhile. I know I shouldn't have kept you waiting. But I'm here now."

"The one and only, Britney."

"Are you ready?"

"That smash on the radio, bet I penned it."

(Even though two are said by Danja and the last one is the motto for that other producer)

me too tbh as a musician I LOVE the chord progression of Conscious/Conscience. I love minimalist music in general, and it just has everything I look for haha! and for sure it's her artistic peak :mhm:

also, can the BArmy just collectively agree to call it "Conscience" instead of "Conscious", because one of them is what Britney's singing about and the other means you're not knocked out :lmaolol: I used it in the OP for continuity's sake, but good god it gets on my grammar nazi nerves :likethat:

YES! Conscious, Peep Show, Ouch, Dramatic, Money Love & Happiness... and finally Mona Lisa! They are all sooooo damn underrated tbh :crying1:

honestly been on my mind for a while. been gettin increasingly confident in my voice again (been 2 years(!) since I last did BG vocals, and the first time since I quit cigs) and been slowly doin songs and honestly, so many demos from this era inspire me :crying1:

needed to be said indeed, if we're baying for Artsy Fartsyney, we should pay homage to the original doll artsy fartsy era :crying5:

also this place needs a quality thought piece to hold us over til PG :embarrassed:

I KNOW I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, did you read FROOT's review on Pitchfork? Got a really solid 7.5 (as a comparison, most albums designated "Best New Music" get like 8.0 - 8.2; they're hella hard to please). Thought you'd enjoy it :)

I will def read it later (since I'm a bit busy rn), cause I love the album (as you probably noticed  :aintevenmad:). Thank You so much <3

np  tho brace yourself for some Electra Heart shade (they aren't fans of that record, found it too superficial to be taken seriously). But FROOT is such a great record, and I'm sure many of the points they make on the record will resonate with ya <3
