For many who aren't familiar with the name Judy Garland, she was perhaps the first major gay icon in gay culture. She and Britney shared many similarities such as child stars turned mega stars who both had public breakdowns and even when putting out albums, always considered it their "Comeback" and to no surprise, both hated that term. Well, someone made a video of Judy Garland to Britney's "Lucky" and even though their just movie clips, many people who worked with her said Judy never acted a part because every character she portrayed was in some ways parts of her true self.

Britney also sang a song from the (very underrated) movie musical "In The Good Old Summertime" on her Star Search appearance - "I Don't Care" which Judy originated. It was one of my favorite dittys that my grandma use to sing around the house.

I didn't know Judy Garland was a gay icon...? what did she do lol?

But I LOVE Wizard Of Oz. She's great!! :)

The day she died was the same day the events at Stonewall took place which was a major revolution in gay culture. Her association with The Wizard of Oz and "Over the Rainbow" and what the rainbow came to signify in gay history sort of unofficially launched her into gay icon status.

Her problems with drug dependency and depression are something gay people can identify with (the last part rather). Despite her success and the fact that she was so loved, Judy always felt like she never felt in or was wanted anywhere. She constantly had money issues and felt the world had turned its back on her (the way the community can feel a lot of the time). I think more than anything, so many in the gay community look up to her (and others like Britney) because of the hard shit they've had to overcome. They can relate. And it's nice to have a public figure that shares your pain. /endrant

You're welcome. I love Judy and babbling about her to anyone who'll listen lol.

I see a lot of similarities between her and Brit (esp back in 07 when things were really scary)

Also remember that Liza Minnelli is her daughter, who also played a big role promoting LGBT rights! Judy played a pretty big symbolic role for many gays back in the day. Fascinating stuff tbh, and great vid too; there's def similarities between Judy and Brit!

Imagine Britney singing Over The Rainbow  :crying1:

I think she can relate to so many clasic starts, like Marilyn Monroe, which is amazing and sad at the same time. Good thing that she's happy now!

True, and i think Britney would kill that song. Remember it's the song she chose for Carly on Xfactor
