PopCrush “Pretty Girls†isn’t your typical Britney Spears lead single (not that it’s even confirmed to be from an album), in that it’s not particularly a sonic game-changer, a la “Gimme More,†“Hold It Against Me†or “I’m A Slave 4 U.†Instead, she’s opted to supply a bout of breezy, radio-friendly fun rather than anything too left-lane. (For that, I’ll kindly direct you to her genius cover of Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner†on Giorgio Moroder’s upcoming album, Déjà vu.) Still, the song’s a no-brainer hip-pop bop. It’s cute! And it already sounds like a pre-existing hit, which’ll have the public flockin’ — like bees to the hon-ayy, if you will. If the two pretty girls touch down from their intergalactic journey in the upcoming Earth Girls Are Easy-inspired video just right, it’ll be a surefire contender for Song Of Summer ’15. Spin They of “Fancy†fame — on the rubbery girl-power anthem that definitely skews a bit more Blackout than Britney Jean, though we’ll take “Tom’s Diner†instead of Iggy talking about her “thick cake†any day. HeadlinePlanet Early feedback is mixed and seemingly contingent on one’s existing appreciation for Spears and/or Azalea. One commonality to much of the premature commentary, however, is talk of a similarity to Azalea’s breakthrough hit “Fancy.†HollywoodLife The catchy summer song is full-on girl power, and Iggy’s magnificent rap skills pair well with Brit’s timeless pop vocals. It even sounds a little bit like old-school Gwen Stefani — we’re definitely hearing some “Hollaback Girl†influence. TIME It’s the battle of the “Fancy†sequels: Charli XCX may bedropping that kitty with Ty Dolla $ign and Tinashe, but Iggy Azalea and Britney Spears are making a power play for 2015’s song of the summer with their hotly anticipated collaboration, “Pretty Girls.†The Australian emcee begins her verse with a Fugees-Roberta Flack reference, as if to convince skeptics of her hip-hop credentials following last year’s backlash, while Britney alerts listeners that, despite the outer-space album art and her vocoder-heavy “Tom’s Dinerâ€cover, she’s still capable of sounding like a human being. Popdust The 33-year-old’s penetrating coos blanket Azalea’s earthy vocal with an exhilarating sparkle and longing, too, sizing up the three-minute glossy and audacious anthem as a liberating combustible. But Pretty Girls is undoubtedly not Spears’ finest musical moment; an examination of her commanding 16-year catalog (buoyed by such undeniable classics as …Baby One More Time, Oops!…I Did It Again, Lucky, Toxic, Piece of Me and Womanizer) will elicit grunts of frustration. It would be hard for anyone with such a quintessentially modern pop songbook to map uncharted territory, especially when the landscape has shifted and morphed into something completely unrecognizable since Spears blasted onto the scene in 1999. But in 2015, Pretty Girls is the kind of bizarrely dynamic and contagious hook that could fuel Miss Spears back to chart relevancy once again. “All around the world, pretty girls wipe the floor with all the boys,†thrusts the slinky chorus. “Pour the drinks. Bring the noise. (It’s Iggy Iggz). We’re just so pretty!. Guardian Liberty Voice The good news about Pretty Girls is that it is catchy, and that the duo of Spears, 33, and Australian rapper Azalea, 24, are currently working on a sexy, throwback style 1980s-influenced video to go along with it. Azalea starts off one of her verses with a reference to Roberta Flack and the hip-hop group, the Fugees, who were formerly known as Tranzlator Crew. Both Azalea and Spears give great vocal performances in Pretty Girls, and Spears does not employ the vocoder, as she did in her cover of Tom’s Diner. Britney Spears goes full-out pop goddess on the song, and Iggy Azalea’s rap skills are also showcased in what could very well turn out to be the biggest hit of the summer. FDRMX My one complaint about the track is that it could have been a little longer. Coming in at just under three minutes (the song clocks in around 2:44), the song could have benefitted from an extended dance break or even an extended outro complete with a little more vocal improvising. As it stands, the track is filled to bursting with energy from start to finish. Just giving the production a little time to breathe may have added new dimension and much needed chance to catch your breath. DDN The summer song has got catchy music and lyrics and it is full-on girl power. Iggy has paired her superb rap skills well with amazing pop vocals of Britney.
