A lot of acts sell around 100,000 without any hits - rock bands, indie, r&b, etc. Because they have loyal fanbases. Even many of Britney's core fans were turned off by Brady Jetson because a) she did no promo and b) the music just wasn't good. Pop acts rely on the GP because they're expected to sell more than a rock band, but when the GP doesn't know the album exists, it can't sell. If Britney puts in the work, she can have another smasha.

Yes that's true, but if she doesn't, she will flop harder and harder tbh

I feel like as some people has said the market has changed a lot. The GP is not interested in buying albums anymore, they just buy the songs they constantly hear on the radio and if they want to listen to the whole album they go to spotify or youtube, you know? The only people buying albums are the fans of the artists because someone who just "likes" Selena or Britney won't probably want to spend money on them when there are many ways to enjoy their music for free.

But Halsey doesn't have any hits and nobody knows her tbh. Lana didn't do any promo either and her lead single peaked at #52 on billboard hot 100. i bet that most people who bought BJ are her old fans. Next album (even if it's good) won't sell even the 100k if she doesn't do any promo.

Halsey is getting bigger, so her numbers are understandable. New Americana and Trouble are definitely pretty well known songs right now. :)

But when you compare Brady Joad's sales to those acts, you have to also consider that Britney has been around for 15 years. She's not the cool, fun, funky, new thing anymore. She also did literally zero promo or push for the single + album, and had no major hits attached to the record :4music:

Those artists are all in or around their prime, and most of them (The Weekend, Areola) had huge singles. Lama had a lot of buzz, Drake is one of the biggest acts in music and has constant radio play... Brine Joan could have been a much bigger flop tbh. Luckily it wasn't a great album so I wasn't sad to see it flop... but if Godney puts in work and wants another smasha, she can easily do it. EASILY  :smokeney:

YES! This! :crying1: And the list of producers Britney is working with is really promissing, so let's keep our fingers crossed for the best result!

And dead at Lama :gloria:

I wish, but not really. I only heard New Americana once and it was on Beats 1 so it's not even the normal radio station :/ Actually I wish New Americana was a hit since it's such an amazing song and the music video slays. The whole Badlands is simply one of the best albums this year <3 I wish her best

Yes, the market has clearly changed. But several artists - those who put effort into their music quality and promotion - still sells a lot of records. Nicki did 244,000 first week, The Weeknd did 412,000, Taylor sold over a million, Ed Sheeran's album did 210,000 (before streaming was included...) My point was that Britney's sales were disappointing, but not bad considering all things, especially that "it girls" from today are flopping.

Ok don't drag me for this but honestly Selena's new album isn't half bad! I'm not gunna go buy it and have meltdowns for her but some of it is solid work.

Sis I won't drag anyone for liking what they like, I can only preach what I think - I think it's a boring flop shit album that will be forgotten in a few weeks. Mediocre songs, nothing memorable.. it's full of fluff. As boring as Selma's stage presence tbh  :smokeney:

Oh yeah, there are definitely exceptions, like the extremely popular mainstream artists of the moment, but yeah, that's basically the reason they sell, because they're the "cool" artists at the time, just like Britney and Xtina on the early 2000's and Rihanna and Gaga on the late 2000's/early 2010's. Because they're trendy people are more willing to buy their music, just like they buy the clothes that are "in".

And yeah, BJ's numbers weren't THAT bad, and I actually think that those numbers show how wide her fanbase is because we (with a little help from casual listeners of course) can take an unpromoted album to the first spots of the charts.

Rihanna was never even a huge album seller, though. Her first week peak was Unapologetic with 238,000 units in 2012. Just a year earlier, Femme Fatale had a higher first sales week, with 276,000 - and Britney was long past her "cool" (fun and funky) streak by then. But the singles were good, and the GP saw her out there promoting.

Really? Here in Europe she's slowly getting the recognition. Not that the radios are playing her much, but I see a lot of friends posting her songs, and she's very popular on Tumblr, Instagram etc... Yup, actually I think New Americana is one of the weakest, Badlands has amazing songs! :)

Tom's diner is fun and funky and very very cool though  :yeahkright:

She doesn't need to get a ton of media attention to have a hit album, she just needs good music and a decent promo push  :tomh:

The fact that Selena Gomez's Revival is garnering good reviews from critics really speaks on how low standards are for the current crop of Disney/Nickelodeon stars.   I gave her album a listen or two today and I was bored... hell Miss. Gomez sounds bored herself.  Britney made being a teen/younger female artist look easy and all these girls -- bias aside -- pale by comparison.  Taylor Swift being the #1 pop star in the world only emphasis how far we've dropped.  She's got catchy songs, aided by Max Martin too, has a passable voice but has very limited stage presence.  Ariana Grande & Tinashé are the only two that are keeping my interest, tbh, from the new crop of girls.  But even their latest offerings are leaving me underwhelmed too.

Janet's Unbreakable is everything -- sonically, vocally, lyrically.  Easily one of the best albums released this year (so far).   :slay:

We need FF singles tbh. Her best album yet with the biggest hit singles :tbh:

Such a thrilling time.  Remembering HIAM hitting radio -- minus a deal -- like an atomic bomb gives me chills.  Watching TTWE & IWG gradually become radio smashes was fun too.  I love that album.   :yas:
