I'm not an english speaker, but I don't know where I read, or why, but I've always thought it was a slang for like, "kiss", not literally kiss, but like, you know, like in a figuratively way. So I thought hit, was a metaphor of a metaphor, if that makes any sense (I know it doesn't) Like not necessarily kiss, but when, like something that lets her know that they're still together, or that they're back together.

 

But if they say so, that must be it. You can always learn something new about a 17 years old song.
