So I remember right before the Circus era, back when good sis Jocasta was turning tricks on the street for Burger King,  the original rumor was that there was a song called "Underground" that was going to be the lead single. That eventually changed to being a song called "Mannequin". Then the famous video surfaced of Legend Jean slaying a secret rehearsal... to Mannequin.

Then Womanizer came along and snatched its weave  :hflip:

Do you think the Circus era would have slayed or flopped if they led with Mannequin? I love the song, but it's definitely not radio friendly and the lyrics are hardly audible in some parts. Imagine if she did the Circus tour choreo on TV or in the video  :zoomzoom:  :pieceofwhat:

I don't think so. There were too much buzz around Britney and the album back then, so I guess it wouldn't flop.

IMO Circus should have been the first single and womanizer the second single.

It was "Britney's comeback" and everyone wanted to see her and support her so I think any song would have been a hit because of the anticipation :xf1: And if she had performed or at least danced the choreo from the rehearsal in the music video everyone would have gone crazy

I think it would have drastically changed the mood of the Circus era. I feel like if Mannequin was the lead single it would have seemed like a personal view into Britney during her "breakdown". I think the GP was definitely curious to know what Britney was thinking and how she felt. Offering "Mannequin" and even potentially "Blur" as Britney's way to address the dark periods in her life would have made her seem far more sympathetic and human to the GP. But Britney's team's approach was denial and amnesia (a fitting Circus track). I don't think Britney is embarrassed by her "breakdown" period, at least not to the extent her team is. She seemed to acknowledge her behavior in a rational way and was ready to move forward. And part of moving forward is accepting her past. But her team wouldn't let her publicly do so. Her music stopped growing with her. If "Circus" held an ironic message of the media circus, that would be one thing. However, dancing with caged animals drew comparisons from PETA that Britney was caged too. Mannequin would have changed her public image in that it was moody and personal, but instead she was turned out glossy and empowering with Womanizer-- in spite of having any power. I feel like Britney's career since Circus has been strange. With the POM era, she seems to be returning to the Britney that we know and love. All of her singles have been impersonal, save for the HIAM video, which is telling of Britney in some way.

I'm sorry, am I the only person who thinks Britney's team literally ignoring the elephant in the room during the circus era is weird?

It would have done well because tbh anything she released would have been a hit. Even My Baby. :pieceofwhat: There was so much hype for her comeback it couldn't fail. Plus, how hot would the video have been? And they would have likely used the choreography in that rehearsal video. It would have been huge.

I don't get those who say the lyrics are hard to understand. It's easy. :zoomzoom:

Mannequin is a great song but it definitely wasn't lead single material. I don't think it was single material at all tbh

This!!

90% of the time all I have to do is look for @@heather s response because I know it's going to be the T!!

I love Mannequin and had she performed the legendary choreo from her studio rehearsal in the Music Video, then I probably would have said make it a single now!!!! But if I'm being honest I don't think it is better than the singles that were chosen and I probably would have picked Shattered Glass or Amnesia as a 5th single before Mannequin..  :mhm:
