The music video was directed by Jospeh Kahn who previously directed  "Stronger", "Toxic", and "Womanizer". Homegirl trusted Jospeh with directing "Perfume" music video and said: "We've had a lot of success together & there is nobody I trust more with this super personal song" Britney has said that "Perfume" is one of her most personal songs. The song is built around themes of jealousy and suspicion in a relationship. Britney revealed that the song was about one of her ex boyfriends.
