Today we celebrate the seventh birthday of Britney’s iconic single, ‘Radar.’

Radar was co-produced and co-written by the Swedish duo Bloodshy & Avant. The Swedish duo is also responsible for Britney’s major hit singles, ”Piece Of me” and ”Toxic.” This song is the first to be featured on two different studio albums by Britney, it appears on Blackout (2007) as an album track and on Circus (2008) as a bonus track. The song was initially planned as the fourth single from Britney’s Blackout album, however due to personal set backs was released as the fourth single from Circus, almost a year later.

The song’s music video was directed by Dave Meyers, who had previously worked with Britney on her videos for “Boys” and “Lucky” as well as the commercial for her Curious fragrance. In the video, Britney is torn between two love interests, a polo player and a wealthy guy. In an interview with MTV, Meyers explained that when he met up with the Britney to discuss what he had in mind, he had a specific vision: to show the world Britney’s “classy side,” instead of the sexed-up image that most of her clips portray. He said: “I thought, ‘It’s not the first single [from Circus]. Let’s be a little experimental and push to not have her around dancers.’ I feel, I guess, that the videos are a chance for her to vocalize a sense of herself. The media tends to attack her, so I thought, ‘Let’s show the classy side of Britney and focus on a classy experience, very European-inspired.’ And she’s at the point in her career where I think this would be a nice step.”

Myers told MTV News that Britney got nervous around the guy playing her lover (not her official boyfriend) in the video. However the director added that shyness captured her essence, “She was really shy with this guy. She’s really pretty here too,” he said. “I think it’s the Britney a lot of us know and love. It was nice to bring that out in her.”tumblr_ltj94qTOXy1r3ty02o1_500.gif?resiz

Gutierrez, who plays the love interest, revealed to a Polo magazine what it was like to work with Britney and also how he got the role, ”I had nothing to do with it.  The producer looked at photos and chose me.  I thought I was going to be an extra.  I didn’t know I was the main guy until that day.  I thought it was just for polo.  Britney was really polite.  She was laughing a lot when we were taping and kept apologizing.”

The music video for “Radar” was originally planned to be shot in June 2008 as a fourth single from her album, Blackout, but was cancelled, as her record label didn’t want to continue releasing singles from the album and personal concerns during the time. Britney was also in the process of finalizing her new album ‘Circus,’ and wanted to focus on her new era and image. Due to contractual agreements, Radar was included on the new album and made the cut as the fourth single from, ‘Circus.’

The June 2008 release, would have had Britney direct the music video with an entirely different concept. The New York Post confirmed:

“Britney Spears won’t just be singing in her next music video — she’ll be directing it too. The ‘Toxic’ star, 26, will go behind the camera for new single Radar, which is out in July. A source said: “She wants to make sure it’s exactly right.” Britney Spears is heading across the pond. Larry Rudolph, who has manages the pop star, confirmed Spears will travel to England to shoot the latest video from her album ‘Blackout,’ for the single, ‘Radar.’ ”The theme is; her and her girlfriends are going to be looking all around London trying to find a boy who she met in a club,” Rudolph told the New York Post’s PopWrap. ”Every time they think they have him, it’s someone else.” Spears will also head behind the camera for the clip, co-directing the video, Rudolph confirmed. ”She will be behind the camera as much as possible; she wants to make sure it’s exactly right, he said. The pop singer will head to London, Chelsea next week for the shoot.”

The original single cover for the June 2008 intended release was different to the 2009 release:

The video, inspired by Madonna’s music video for ‘Take A Bow.’

Meyers thinks Britney’s career mirrors Madonna’s career in some ways. Much like with Madonna, when Britney does something, “Everyone seems to watch.” “She kind of filled [Madonna’s] shoes,” Meyers said. “[but] everything is done in a Britney way. She’s not Madonna, and Madonna is not Britney. It seems like Madonna made the same choices that were right for her at the time, to class her up when she had just done a sexpot video. She was riding that image train too. She was leading that image train, and I think that Britney has done that as well.”

Candies did all the clothes for the video. Britney was also a spokeswoman for Candies during this time and had her own clothing line. britney_spears_radar_candies.jpg?resize=

The music video leaked early, online on July 1, 2009. Critics praised the video for the different direction Britney took. Nadia Mendoza of The Sun said, “forget PVC Catsuits and teeny weeny air hostess outfits. Britney Spears has gone all sophisticated on us” and positively commented on the fashion, saying “Britney dons a hat more suited to Ascot than a music video”.Peter Gicas of E! commented that the video was a nice departure from her recent more choreographed videos, such as “Womanizer” and “If U Seek Amy.” He commended it for its “more straightforward approach in telling a so-called story”

The Radar horse became it’s own celebrity, similar to ‘Banana The Snake’ from Britney’s MTV 2001 performance. There are websites and Twitter pages dedicated to the iconic animal.

This song is a production masterpiece... <3 The beat intro and ending are super and the lyrics is really clever and humor in a way.

One of the best song in Britney career and deserve a better treatment video. (Although i love the original too :yeaaok: )

I honestly would have rather have the video be from the tour performance, you know? I really like the Thunderstorm segue and the simple choreography :yestbh:

And the production of this song :jackk: Oh my God. It puts me in a trance. I wish B&A were on B9 :bigtime:
