Why Do You Think Glory Underperformed And What Can Britney & Her Team to turn things around?

I think Glory deserves to have all the success in the world, but the fact that it under-performed is undeniable.

I think its because of poor and ill advised performance and television appearances/Video/Album Cover but the music is so good that I think they can turn it all around.

How?

I think Britney has to throw conventions/top 40 out the window. Yep, that's right I said it.

Luckily for her she has tracks on "Glory" that can broaden her sound/appeal outside of the fan base and get the indie/blogs round the world rooting for her again.

  • She should fulfill her current promo schedule AND THEN stop the live performances/interviews
  • Shoot two singles back to back for a smaller budget and hire more artistic directors to create viral/art videos to get people talking about the MUSIC. Think outside the box
  • Release 2 Radio singles to international markets sans video: No Seas Cortes/Coupure Electrique
  • Avoid the Bieber and Selena comparisons and DO not play it safe! that means none of these "trendy" songs like: "Just Luv Me", "Better", "Slumber Party" as singles. (even though I luv them)

- "If I'm Dancing" and "Coupure Electrique" are the songs she needs to make videos for - think Lana Del Rey/Robyn with great visuals that make them viral hits.

And if they are successes then release 1 or 2 more singles to close off the record. Which ones? doesn't matter these can be the labels bid for top 40 and feature commercial videos with all the sponsoring in the world and Britney can resume her live television promotional campaign but without the negative connotation surrounding this era.

I just think Britney can't afford to play it safe anymore. She's losing ground in this overcrowded market.

Make Me is the problem. I still like the song don't get me wrong but after listening to the album you just wonder why they wanted THAT to be the lead single.

The album can have longevity if she keeps promoting it but right now they need to GIVE UP on Make Me asap. If they keep forcing it this era is going nowhere.

IA 100% and it needs to just get the plug pulled from it now!

Also, I really do think Britney SHOULD NOT do any more "Britney" style songs or Trantor/Bieber/Gomez sounding trend-chasers because its not what she needs right now. Could they crack top 20-40? sure, but all they do is diminish how much of a clear maturation of sound this record really is for her and dilute what makes this record exceptional

I hear some queens calling this the new "Ray of Light", its so NOT that. It's more like Madonna's "Bedtime Stories" - it shows restraint and growth. She needs to move far away from her safety net sound wise and who she works with for visuals on her records - she needs to make videos that are striking and ones that people remember because that image will help sell this exceptional music.

Not to mention with that video that not even the fans like, how is it supposed to be a hit at this point or be good promo for the album?

She needs to choose another single (not another mid-tempo song tho) before it's too late.

I'm nervous because I generally feel like fans want: "Slumber Party", "Just Luv Me" and/or "Do You Wanna Come Over" and I honestly don't think any of those songs will do that well. DYWCO will do well on the dance charts and will probably go top 20 for sure but I think it would drop very fast and its exactly what people expect from her and most people will just turn the station - OH, another dance song from Britney and only listen to it when they are drinking or going out. "Just Luv Me" is like Madonna's song "Miles Away" it sounds great but it WILL NOT save this album because like that song there are too many songs that it sounds like and "Slumber Party" is a jam but not as a follow up second song Britney needs to go full cray-cray with this next single or say bye bye bye to Glory.

it would be higher in the chart if it hadn't leaked a week early and if everybody had not talked about links to it.

Femme Fatale leaked like a month before being released.

I think it only would have sold slightly better tbh

Like maybe an additional 20k - tops!

I think the VMA's could have helped with at least a 60k album push and made her number 1 on the album charts ngl - but we all know what happened...

I don't think it underperformed. Britney keeps a low profile these days and she still pulled impressive numbers. Her name is still a brand but the Britney era will never happen again, and she doesn't want it to. She's having fun and doing it the way she wants. I don't know why some of her fans are so obssessed with the top spot when she clearly isn't. I would think what we want is good music and we got it. I think the album and single have done very well considering.

Just my two cents. :-)

This! Glory hasn't underperformed in the slightest. Being number one isn't everything, nor is it the only measure of success.

Well, first of all I don't think Glory underperformed, it did well on the USA and extremely well worldwide! I feel like after seeing these numbers her team should really consider doing some proper promo overseas! She's gonna have to travel to London to do the iTunes festivals, so I'd take the chance to release the second single by then and do some promo on the UK (talk shows, radio interviews, or even another performance in another TV show). The MV for the second single needs to be carefully prepared aswell. I'd make something simple but effective, maybe having an intro with her singing said single acapella and then once the actual song starts have her doing a killer choreography in some cool setting, do you know what I mean? Then she could attend the AMA's and perform a Glory medley with Invitation as an intro, then the second single and at the end a bit of another song that would eventually become the third single!

I don't know if this makes sense, I don't know much about this stuff, but I think it'd be very nice!

I feel bad for overseas, I feel like they are a very neglected fan base.

See, I wasn't sure if I was being ignorant, I just didn't think that #3 was a bad debut...in my heart it is number one but I never expected it to be on the charts...

I know her main focus is the USA, but it's a bit unfair since she's a global artist, not a local singer! It had been a while since she had done this good in Europe, and she always does really well in Asia, so this is the right time to go and do some proper promo abroad, it'd do wonders! She should also visit some Latin American countries, they stan so hard for her

Considering she was number 3 to a legendary artist like Barbra who bundled ticket sales with her album, and a popular country music band (which the genre is hugely popular in the us with notoriously loyal fans) number 3 is a major accomplishment!

Glory performed well in many countries including the US. Yes I feel a better (or the original) MM video that would have gone viral and gathered interest from the GP would have helped but she is doing great for where she is at in her career and coming head to head with Barbs and a popular country group of the moment.

Minus the MM video and album art, I'm extremely happy with this era

Some will argue that it is not underperforming and doing as well as other big names today like Ariana and Selena.

the problem is...as big as they are today they are no britney size.

Justin beiber and Beyonce both demonstrated sales can still happen.

we can blame 'make me' for not being strong enough but at the same time... Beyonce havent had an actual hit from the past 2 albums she had yet shes selling like crazy even when she surprise drops an album.

britneys problem is that shes just not cool with her attitude.

also as pains as it is to say...britney is a gay symbol now...if you are a guy and you tell someone you loooove britney youll be gay bashed on the spot... In our society nobody wants to be associated with that kind of artist.

not to mention theres something about listening to britney that makes ppl think youre stupid idk what it is but i heard about it lots of times like 'really youre listening to britney spears ? Are you 6 years old ? Grow up!'.

she doesn't help it herself. The other ladies on the scene are really hardcore they are leading strong and fierce and dont let shit be said about them and then theres britney who is sweet to the core its a little bit of a turn off.... When she performed DYWCO on the today show and she couldnt stop grinning and smiling ear to ear during a song that was supposed to be fierce and cool i just felt so bad for her.

comparing songs that are actual badass songs she used to make like 'matm', 'toxic','gimme more', 'piece of me', 'womanizer', 'circus', 'if you seek amy' , 'scream and shout' to the meterial on BJ and Glory just doesn't work... They are great but they are just sweet cuteney not badass fiercney that ppl love

I really was hoping for 150k+ so if you compare it to what I wanted/expected form the start of the era then I have to say it really did under-perform. The team made mistakes with the MM video, the VMA performance, the leak.. It all could have went so much better if there was just a little bit more professionalism from her team. I also think they picked a horrible time to release it- a weak when both Barbra and FGL had albums coming out. TERRIBLE timing, 115k would have been enough for #1 under most circumstances if only her team released it at the right time. I also think the lack of promo when Make Me isinitially released was a huge reason why the song under-performed, but I guess the leak is to blame for that :displeased:

Also I disagree with most of what you say in this thread and I think that stuff about videos for If I'm Dancing and Coupure Elcectrique is a terrible idea, reminds me of what Miley did with her Dead Petz albuum which basically killed her music career :displeased: Britney's future lies in the mainstream market- FF performed so well because it gave the GP exactly what they want from Britney Spears- catchy, radio-friendly pop songs; although her Glory style music can be that successful too if both herself and her team worked hard enough :displeased: But that's just my opinion, you're entitled to your beliefs bb :awkwarddd:

you're right, she does extremely well in Asia- especially Japan and South Korea- both huge markets! Japan is the second biggest music market in the world just behind the US! I've been saying for years she should promote there more :bomt: And the great performance in Europe shows that the GP of our countries are also thirsty for ha- she'd do amazingly well if she did a promotional tour in Ireland, UK, France, Spain, Germany, etc :goodside:

Exactly! It'd be really easy for her to do a promotional tour in Europe, she already did in 2014 with the Intimate Collection! She'd just need to do a M&G/Album signing event for the fans on the capital city of that country, some interviews for the local press, and maybe take some time to do some TV appearances in some of the biggest markets (the UK for example). It'd just take one week and a half/two weeks and she could also take her family with her so it'd feel more like a vacation :yestbh:
