Today marks 13 years since pop princess Britney Spears released Toxic!

To celebrate the timeless masterpiece, which took the pop world by storm when it was released on 13 January 2004, we’re taking you back in time with 13 facts about the song that might just surprise you…

01. Toxic was written by Cathy Dennis from D-Mob, who also wrote Kylie Minogue’s hit single Can’t Get You Out of My Head. The song was originally intended for Kylie too, but she turned it down.

02. The music video came out at the same time as Janet Jackson’s infamous Superbowl nip slip, which forced MTV to only show the video after 10pm, as some people viewed Britney’s nude scene as ‘indecent material’.

03. In 2005, Toxic earned the singer her first Grammy award for Best Dance Recording – the track was was produced by Bloodshy & Advant, who also worked on her fifth studio album Blackout.

04. The hook which helps get the song stuck in your head for days is actually based on a sample of a track called Tere Mere Beech Mein, taken from 1981 Bollywood movie Ek Duuje Ke Liye.

05. Toxic is Britney’s most expensive video to date, and one of the most expensive of all time, costing $1 million to make.

07. The passenger that had the honour of getting a drink spilled on him by the Britney was actually Joseph Kahn’s long-term casting director, while the man she took to the bathroom was his casting director’s assistant.

08. The choreography in the music video was planned by Spears herself alongside X Factor UK’s creative director Brian Friedman.

09. An early rumour surrounding the song was that Tim Burton was lined up to direct the video for the hit single, and that it would follow a circus theme – this turned out to be false, of course.

10. In 2013, Jay Z said during a Twitter Q&A that Toxic was his favourite Britney song.

 

11. The entire video was Britney’s idea with a few tweaks from Kahn.

13. Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NME, and The Telegraph all named Toxic as one of the best singles of the first decade of this millennium – and rightly so.
