That year – 2007 – was a dark time for Britney: she had lost custody of her two sons and was put under a conservatorship which signed her life and fortune over to her father and her lawyer. The legal framework for conservatorships is usually reserved for extremely ill people, and it basically stripped Spears of the right to make any decision in her own life, or access her immense fortune.

The cship started in 2008 not 2007:displeased:

This rejuvenates my wanting for the conservatorship to end!

This also makes me angry at how true this is, how being a woman today is still considered less than than men. The part where the article says that they tamed her and how she can't even buy a Starbucks or iTunes song without authorization makes me want to cry.

This is what I keep telling everyone about why Britney hasn't REALLY gotten back into the mainstream :tbh:  She's still carrying the stigma of her mental breakdown and it's almost like people are ashamed to want to listen to her or say they like her :mhm:

it's so sad :crying2:

I dunno, in some ways I think the breakdown made her cool again... although perhaps in an "ironic" hipster kinda way. Once she got back on her feet and became America's sweetheart and pop princess again, that's when she went back to being uncool. I think her relevance has also been declining because A) lack of decent promo, and B) generation switch in terms of who is buying music nowadays, Britney's too old for the kids.

I direct young people between 13-18, and they dont know Britney had a breakdown or is under c-ship. Really. the only people thaat care are people over 30 years or fans. No body really gives a shit, besides fans.

She really just doesn't sing like Adelle, Sia, or Gaga. Really. Her music is good, but people are just not into her voice, and I think thats it. They dont even care for Madonna. nobody cares about music when you pay nothing for spotify. People are downloading directly from youtube, and Ed Sheran is a hit..

Really, stop thinking it's the c-ship when it really isn't. And Britney doesn't give a shit about being famous, she never did, and she doesn't care about sale..

Yes, and it's so frustrating. People just ignore her music and assume it's gonna be bad just because it's Britney Spears, but if any other artist had released Glory it would've smashed because it was one of the best albums of 2016 :thatsright:

There's a few things at play when it comes to her and lack of  relevantness.

Her core fanbase has dwindled over the years. All of her contemporaries are picking up where she's left off in terms of delivering "true music", by that I mean they let it be known that they are heavily involved with the writing, producing, arraignment, or otherwise directing the content they produce to a degree. They have all worked very hard to strengthen their vocals as well, but Britney is just now taking this aspect seriously. Those who remember that she's still under the conservatorship are not taking her independence seriously either so part of her esthetic of being a boss bitch just doesn't hold true. A lot of her routine also feels dated and she's not appearing innovative enough. I don't think she has radio support. I don't think her label truly views her as being able to be impactful either so they keep fucking up her videos and when she does put up a good one, they don't promote it properly. All of this lack of push from her, her teams and the radio means that no matter what she puts out or how together she seems people will only care about the most interesting thing about her which happens to be the breakdown. She can play quick and dirty controversy releasing a song that calls out JT, the haters and copy cats directly; or that fully addresses her breakdown; or touches on sensitive subjects like abuse or addiction, and that could be enough to get people to care. But since she's clearly not about playing dirty, don't expect her to do anything that will make people forget the breakdown. What most likely will happen is once she's no longer with RCA and gets a new strategy or she stops performing all together for a bit, there will be a renewed interest in her. Until then she's "safe", not winning and not losing just "safe".

They hate her just because of oversexualized songs + sexual video content and lip-sync & lots of auto-tune . RCA just can start her REAL comeback with some decent music videos + world tour with live vocals & vocal coach from 90's era + personal songs & interviews about her personal life & c-ship.

Pretty much nailed it imo. Depending on the age group we're talking about, there are definitely multiple factors in play.

I mean, people not only still bring up the breakdown, but they also don't understand whatever happened back then. Most of my friends usually say 'I don't listen to Shitney Spears, she's a drug addict who shaved her head' which hurts me a lot to hear because they don't even know all the stuff she went through and because their parents tell them whatever they remember happening, doesn't mean they know shit for sure.

Everytime I defend her and try to explain the breakdown wasn't about that, they treat me like a weirdo. While all of them listen to artists like Beyonce, Rihanna and stuff, they still come for me saying I shouldn't consider an 'old woman' my idol.

While I do agree a bit that Britney is a guilty pleasure, I find it annoying and childish to keep bashing her without knowing about her.

And, oh, wait, whatever they are all listening to now will end up fading into irrelevancy eventually, music should be a about quality and musical tastes, not about what's in and is the most popular.

I don't think I'll ever understand what is going on with the GP, but I know as a fact Britney isn't an exactly talented singer, and what's wrong with that? I've learnt over the years that talent isn't what's needed to make good music, what really matters is passion and Britney never lacked that.

It will always hit me in my soul when people make fun of a grown woman whose freedom is restricted, we should be making petitions to free her from this mess instead of laughing at her! I hate to be the one to say this, because I know my music taste is extremely generic and boring, but Britney's music has never been 'safe' or 'all the same'. If there's something Britney has always been doing is changing games with each album. What we need now is a game change IN GENERAL. Not only the music. I guess that's one of the reasons she's irrelevant.

Britney is nowhere near as sexualized as Gaga, Rihanna, Selena, etc.

A lot of fans are stuck on Britney being this number one, well respected, top bitch in all categories artist and that's never been who she wanted to be. She got there through her own hard work and dedication and look where she ended up. She'll never sacrifice herself or her family for fame the way people demand of her, and I'm okay with that. Seeing Britney happy and enjoy what she's doing is all I ever want. The numbers don't matter to me. The GP's opinion of her doesn't matter. It NEVER has. She's always been considered a guilty pleasure and less talented than her competitors simply because she's Britney Spears. It's nothing new now, and the only reason she isn't experiencing the same amount of success as before, in my opinion, is because of how everything in the music industry has changed. And how Britney, herself, changed. Her passion for her music, fans and career is still there, but her passion for herself and her family will always be in the forefront, and I believe it should be. People want direct answers of what happened to her during her breakdown, and I don't think that will happen, if ever. She said her peace in FTR, whether people choose to listen to what she said or not is up to them, but Britney doesn't owe any single one of us anything.

But she is there more longer than other singers, so she is more annoying for the GP. Everything with sex is now  as Britney's name.

Everything nowadays is about sex and the industry is very image driven, so the GP does not give a shit about that. She'd probably have more success with the younger generations if she posted more nudes on Insta and only glammed up images like other celebs, instead of goofy pictures of her with her kids. Literally only people who care(d) about Britney being too much about sex were the fans, and that was only until Momney appeared during the FF & BJ eras and then everyone was more than happy for her sexy image to come back.

There is a lot of tea here. Most of it I can agree with:dorkney:
