I'm surprised at Perfume and Criminal, honestly. Happily surprised for Criminal  Confused at Perfume :izudumb: I read reviews for BJ and most didn't seem to like Perfume that much.

MTE! I love Criminal now, it's grown on me so much  :yayy:

I remember reading about the rave reviews of Blackout everywhere. I wasn't a stan then so I thought all the critics were paid to position her for a "comeback" but I'm glad I eventually saw the light because I was literally not worthy of Blackout :crying5:

The media hated Britney then and called it "insincere" after praising the ugly people anthem "Beautiful" :displeased:

How on earth was it insincere? :orangu:

Oh well, it's still one of her best songs at the end of the day and is in countless best of britney songs lists :mhm:

I remember hearing then how fake it sounded, though I'm not sure if insincere was the word... I think it was "sappy"? :4music: We're still waiting for the next Everytime and I so wanted Perfume to be it :displeased:

It was straight after Toxic - I remember the reviews to Everytime - it was hugely successful and liked. It was one of her UK number 1's - it was massive.

I remember the reviews praising her voice and her songwriting - saying it was a masterpiece..

Some of the best ballads do tend to get criticised for being 'sappy' or along those lines. Even 'Hurt' by Christina got some average reviews, when it's one of her best songs. But ikr? We were all expecting Perfume to be Everytime 2.0. I still love it though :mhm:

I guess we didn't hear the same things then cause I always heard it connected to JT and how Britney was the bad guy :4music: Or maybe those were just some shitty friends when I was younger :orangu:

The concept of Perfume was really cool, but needed about three more rewrites and reworks with production :4music:

There were some good lines though like "Do I imagine it or catch these moments? I know you got history" and "Do I imagine it or do I see your stare? Is there still longing there?" (I hope Britney was the one who wrote those parts) but the rhythm, lyrics and prod of the chorus was just off.

Yeah they probably should have stuck to the dreaming mix production tbh. The other one does sound a bit messy.

I feel like she was the one responsible for writing 'i'm gonna mark my territory' :orangu:

Maybe it was different around the world I suppose - I just remember being excited when the reviews were calling it her best work yet...

Either way - it is such a beautiful song  :crying1:

I truly, sincerely hope not, no matter how likely it is :orangu: Sia has some pretty dreadful lyrics every now and then, too so I actually I hope this was one of the new times. The lyrics we know were really written by her are pretty decent. Needed some work (from her Original Doll recordings) but they were decent, and she kinda knew how to write good melodies for the choruses, too

Britney did write 'I smell your breath, it makes me cry' so I wouldn't put it past her :orangu:  But actually, I don't think the marking her territory line is that bad. it makes sense when you really look at the song's meaning. And exactly, I believe she's an extremely capable song writer. Especially in songs like Everytime, Someday ,Let Go etc.
