Umm no. The Britney era singles may have flopped in the U.S., but internationally they smashed. For example, every song but "I Love Rock n Roll" went top five in the U.K. Britney Jean era singles flopped because she didn't promote them at all.

They flopped cuz they simply didn't reach her standard she didn't really promote any of her singles post breakdown but they did well b/c they were hit songs regardless

I think your stats are wrong. Slave made it to like 13 or 14, not 27. And I think Work Bitch peaked either one better or one worse than Slave, I forget exactly.

Plus there was a Britney ban & Napster + cd burners were huge and new, which changed the industry. Also, the numerous rising young female stars shifted the competition in new ways, but none of them really outshined her. And w her change in image and style, it was expected that she wouldn't be marketed to the same demographic. Her backlash began to start getting nasty, which prevented sales to younger fans who relied on their parents to buy the albums (and therefore the rise of mp3s, file sharing, and cd burners were how many fans stayed connected). The Britney era she was definitely still on fire:

she was the talk of the media literally on every tabloid, constantly talked about in news and print

she was in Crossroads, which was successful in terms of sales and money returned

she had a successful tour and sold millions in merchandise

she was on award shows, performed w MJ at the beginning of the era, numerous interviews & appearances

Pepsi and other endorsements, magazine covers

Slave for U VMA is one of pop culture's iconic events, and certainly one of MTV's most memorable moments

Labels were rushing to create the "next Britney" and flooded the market w competition, all who were referenced back to Brit

Britney was still working nonstop

The Britney era is part of her Golden years. Even if it may have been considered a flop back then, the album was successful and multi-platinum, and really her celebrity status began to take a new life of it's own. You cannot define the success of the Britney era by chart positions and sales alone because there are way more factors to consider. Songs from that era are still played on radio and talked about
