Would Britney Still Be World Wide Famous If She Wasn't American?

I mean just think about it.  For some reason, celebs over here in America are celebrated throughout other parts of the world-hell even Africa knows of her according to Oprah.  However, celebrities from other countries aren't celebrated or known to us unless they've established their career here. I've always been puzzled as to why our celebs are celebrated so much in other countries, when most of their people aren't prevalent here. Don't give me wrong, obviously we know of some, but for the most part it seems that American celebs are looked to at a higher standard.  What if she was from London ( I recall her saying her mom has some British in her or something like that)? or Greece, Australia? what would be the outcome? Obviously, I think Britney is extremely talented, but would she be as celebrated if she wasn't American?

I think she would have at least established as big of an American audience as The Spice Girls did. I also see her being kind of Kylie Minogue-esque (it's a shame she isn't bigger here, except for "Locomotion" and "Can't Get You Outta My Head" lol) but I guess a lot of it would have to do with timing and such.
As far as Britney's success goes, I think a lot of it was just a perfect storm of everything falling into place.
You raise a good point though. It's interesting to think about, for sure.

It depends if she would still be singing english or not , no matter what country she's from ? I think she would if she was from UK or even maybe australian (tho i'm not sure considering when she started, there wasn't social media and things like that so.. there was a lot less exposition i think. But if we don't count that, i really think she would be.). But not if she was from any other countries in the world imo especially if she wouldn't sing in english.

And that's kinda sad because some people are really talented, but if they don't at least move to the US they won't be known there and obviously won't have success there and over the world. US is the biggest market in the industry, that's why when you are a US artist you have more and bigger targets, so countries around the world might probably know you, unlike your little country where you're from because nobody cares and pay attention to it.

I think she would be just as famous if she was from the UK. Throughout the music history, UK and the USA gave out some of the best artists out there. I tend to think that UK did produce a bit more quality music, they were usually bands or artists established by their own, while the USA started commercializing their artist in the 70's which lead to produce of a pretty cheap music compared to the UK one. However USA gaves us MJ, and many rock bands. But yeah, I do think Brit would still be big, not as huge as now but big at least for sure.

:mhm: Music from the USA and UK always tend to go worldwide. Like you said, both countries have put out some of the best music in history.

True, when you're from the USA or the UK it's always easier to make it worldwide. I guess language has got a lot to do with it too?

Lots of countries have good/great artists but it's always harder to become a global star when you're from let's say Belgium or Italy.

Of course there are always exceptions: Celine Dion from Canada, Kylie Minogue from Australia. But those are English-speaking countries too.

that's actually a good point

If she were from somewhere else in the U.S. more affluent then she would have a much better chance. Kentwood is not a place stars are born lbr. Kentwood is basically nowhere...so I think ia, cuz say she was born in London, Paris, L.A., New York, Atlanta, etc. (anywhere at least a step or 2 above Kentwood)...her career would theoretically have more opportunities, more connections, more flexibility, more prestige/powerful people...

I do think America specifically is where alot of trends worldwide get started. Breaking thru the U.S. charts is a goal of every international star. Hollywood films and American music industry by far sets the trends worldwide, for better or worse.

But yah, your Kentwood point is perfect cuz being from Kentwood and her socioeconomic status of her family reduced her opportunity by ALOT. Basically bottom of the barrel for opportunity in the U.S. tbh

The US and UK don't necessarily put out the best music, it's just the most known, and the US and UK are two of the strongest countries in the world. Thus the world is catered to people from those places. This is why people say Americans are self-centered and that we don't care about other people in the world. We don't know artists from other countries, but they know ours. People all over the world attempt to learn our language. People care about who we vote for President. People from the US and the UK are very lucky. Britney is lucky she was born not only talented, but also white, American, good looking, and english-speaking.

the 2 best points from this thread are :

- English language is necessary to have worldwide success...so wherever she is from she must speak/sing in English (for world wide appeal)

- Britney was raised in Kentwood, LA. The likelihood and chance of her developing into a global artist is so slim, that it needs to be considered. Had she grown up w money and in a major U.S. city or on the outskirts at least, her chances would be much better. So in comparing her opportunity in Kentwood w London, Paris, Milan, Sydney...the U.S. would not be a better environment.

Britney's incredible talent, luck, personality, support, intuition, drive are the reasons she did well...not specifically because she is from the U.S. since where in the U.S. matters a whole lot
